Nationwide Census of Population beginsAbout 67,100 trained census-takers (enumerators) 13,500 team supervisors and 3,500 census area supervisors will augment the field personnel of the National Statistics Office (NSO) as the simultaneous conduct of the 2010 Census of Population and Housing (CPH) begins on Monday, May 17. The 2010 Census of Population and Housing is the 13th census of population and the 6th census of housing in the country. The census will take an inventory of the total population and housing units and collect information about its demographic, social and economic characteristics as of May 1, 2010 (12:01 a.m.) through personal interview in the 42,023 barangays or about 65,000 enumeration areas in the country. For easy recognition, enumerators, majority of them are public school teachers from the Department of Education, will be wearing official 2010 CPH identification cards as they knock on every housing unit and interview each household. Updated information on the size of the population will provide government planners, policy makers and administrators with data on which to base their social and economic development plans and program. It also serves, among others, as basis for 1) Internal Revenue Allotment for the local government units (LGUs); 2) apportionment of congressional seats for the legislative branch; 3) creation of new LGUs, i.e., provinces, cities, municipalities and barangays; and 4) conversion of a unit to higher level such as from a municipality into a city, among others. Businesses and industries use the statistical information from the census in determining 1) sites for establishing businesses; 2) consumer demands for various goods and services; and 3) supply of labor for the production of goods and services.
